Crackdown on scamsters focuses on fake products
SHANGHAI Minhang People’s Procuratorate handled three cases this month related to the sale of fake products to consumers.
The first case involved a man selling fake Viagra-style medicine. The suspect, surnamed Liu, purchased more than 300 fake pills from a dealer at a price of 5 yuan (72 US cents) per pill, and sold them for 15-30 yuan.
In a police raid, the pills were confiscated, and subsequent tests revealed that they contained sildenafil, which hasn’t been approved by China Food and Drug Administration for production or sale. Liu was arrested on a charge of selling fake medicine.
The second case involved a man selling bogus pet food online. The case was reported to Minhang police by a legitimate pet food company.
The suspect, surnamed Ding, confessed that he purchased common pet food and sold it in the company’s packaging, said the procuratorate.
The last case involved a man, surnamed Guan, who was selling seasoned pork and duck meat as beef and mutton. Most of his customers were hotpot restaurants and street kebab vendors. He was sentenced to eight months in jail.
The district said it has detained 119 suspects in the past few years for producing or selling fake products in the district.
