Criminal gang is broken up by police
MINHANG police arrested 18 people related to a larceny and robbery ring operating under the guise of a massage service.
The Minhang Public Security Bureau said a man surnamed Shao was driving on the Chenhang Highway near Suzhao Road when a woman stopped his car and asked him if he wanted a massage.
Shao agreed and followed her to the apartment she rented. When he got there, several men threatened him. He raced back to his car, only to find that 9,000 yuan (US$1,415) he stashed there was gone. Police said they received several similar reports and concluded that a gang was at work.
They kept the area under surveillance and discovered that every afternoon and evening, several women would stand along the road, stopping cars.
After several days of monitoring, police also spotted a yellow car that appeared in the area frequently.
The owner of the car was a woman surnamed Zeng from central China’s Hubei Province. She had a record of similar crimes elsewhere in China.
Police said Zeng’s gang moved to Shanghai after being released from jail and they rented several apartments in Minhang as their “massage houses.” The “massage service” was actually a prostitution ring.
After being detained, gang members confessed that they worked in couples, police said. While the women were plying massages and sex, the men were stealing valuables from victims’ coats and cars.
If victims got wise to the scam, they were beaten up and robbed, police said. The case is under further investigation.
