Cultural arts debut on a big TV venue
The annual Spring Festival TV Gala has been the mainstay of Chinese New Year’s Eve activities for decades. This year, a new companion program was added to holiday activities.
On the second day of the Spring Festival, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Gala was broadcast for the first time.
“The most exciting thing during the holiday was calling every family member to tell them I was on the cultural heritage program,” said Wang Yanmei, a member of the Jindalai dancing team.
The troupe was one of more than 1,000 acts that included dancing, orchestras, folk songs, kung fu, painting and aerobatics.
The Jindalai dance team, founded in 2006 in Hongqiao Town, is considered by some to be the best Korean-style dance troupe in Shanghai.
The team’s hat dancing, corolla dancing and drum dancing have won it many prizes in competitions.
“I can’t speak Korean beyond saying ‘very good’ and ‘thank you’,” Li Jianping, the director of the program, told dancers after their TV performance.
Li was the executive director of the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics and Shanghai Expo in 2010.
“China has a long and profoundly deep history,” he said. “Our ancestors passed cultural heritage down from generation to generation. It is part of our spirit, and we want to preserve these treasures in an artistic way.”
