Cycas thrive in new conditions

More than 10 cycas trees in the Phoenix Neighborhood started to blossom in late June. The flowers are as high as 80 centimeters, which is quite rare given that the normal size is about 20 centimeters high.

The cycas is a palm-like gymnospermous cone-bearing evergreen plant, native to warm regions and has large, long and narrow compound leaves.

This Eastern Asian tropical shrub has panicles of white, yellowish, or reddish flowers. It blossoms in tropical areas every year but in temperate zones, such as in Shanghai, the plant blooms every 20 to 30 years.

The thriving cycas might be attributable to new growth methods.

"We changed all the soil before planting the trees. The soil has ideal fertility, air permeability and drainage," said gardener Wu Tianbao. "In winter, we wrap the tree roots with straw and in spring and summer, organic fertilizers are applied."
