Dance as a goodwill ambassador
The Minhang Overseas Friendship Association, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra and the Kowloon Federation of Associations joined forces in Hong Kong to stage events to both celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival and honor the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up policies.
A Jinxiu Jiangnan dancing team from the Hongqiao community, comprised of overseas Chinese with an average age of 65, performed the classic dance “Jasmine Flowers.”
In July, some 40 university students from Hong Kong came to Hongqiao Town for a cultural exchange. Many of them stayed in the homes of members of the Jinxiu Jiangnan troupe. On the day of the performance, students brought mooncakes to cheer on the dancers.
“I was a homestay host for three students,” said dance team member Di Fuying. “They called me grandma and I called them sweethearts. They were very interested in traditional culture.”
Peng Weilin, the chief secretary of the Minhang Overseas Association, said that such performances are an important element of cultural exchange.
“We can bring Shanghai culture to Hong Kong,” said Peng. “It tells our story. In this way, more Hong Kong citizens can learn about the mainland and feel a sense of belonging to the motherland.”
Hongqiao Town hired teachers from the Shanghai Theater Academy to choreograph the dance for the Jinxiu troupe.
“There were only 10 people in the troupe when it was formed in 2011,” said Fu Zhongqi, leader of the team. “We were just overseas Chinese who love dancing, but none us had professional training.”
Beside musicians and performers, Zhu Zhisong, Minhang’s Party chief, led a business delegation to Hong Kong to further enhance ties. The delegation discussed Minhang’s business opportunities and welcomed entrepreneurs to the district.
Zhu also visited the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals where he and board members discussed new educational and medical cooperative projects for 2019.
