Digital card to improve health care delivery

MINHANG residents will have their medical treatment histories from hospitals outside the district recorded digitally on new health cards, under a pilot project sponsored by the Ministry of Health.

Doctors in Minhang will be able to access the records of those patients by simply inserting them into terminals. The same information will be accessible at hospitals in cities like Zhengzhou in Henan Province, Shijiazhuang in Hebei Province and Foshan in Guangdong Province, which are also participating in the pilot program.

Patients will also be able to swipe the new cards to pay medical bills. The cards will record a patient's health condition, medical treatment info and what medicines should be avoided.

Residents in Minhang will begin receiving the new cards in June, and about 80 percent of permanent residents registered in the district are expected to be in the program within a year.

Temporary cards may also be issued to people from other parts of China because Minhang has a large number of migrant workers.
