District population is rapidly ageing
MINHANG District has the most rapidly ageing population in Shanghai, according to a report released at the recent Minhang Social Senior Service Development Forum.
In the decade since 2000, the elderly population in the district doubled to 293,100, with 38,900 of them 80 years or older. By 2015, the elderly population is expected to hit 400,000.
A district survey attributed the rise in senior citizens to relocation from downtown areas due to fast urban redevelopment.
The team that worked on the survey recommended that the district pay attention to the needs of an ageing population in formulating plans for the future.
The local government said it will seek to attract more social funding to invest in senior services, addressing needs in caring, health and recreation.
One of the highlights of the report is the concept of a "digital home for the aged."
It suggests an information platform for a "smart community" that would include a network of visual telephones to enable seniors to see children and grandchildren living elsewhere.
It would also include other digital information services related to the elderly people.
By 2010, Shanghai plans to establish 50 "digital" nursing homes - two of them in Minhang.
