District solar energy base gets stronger
Minhang is forging ahead to build itself into a photovoltaic solar energy base within three years, forming an integrated industrial chain, from new energy research and development to product manufacturing.
A "solar valley" °?°?-- Shanghai Photovoltaic Base -- is under construction in Pujiang Hi-tech Park. Covering an area of 30,000 square kilometers, the base will be home to companies that develop solar technology and manufacture solar cells. Its first phase was completed recently and the whole project is scheduled to be finished by 2015.
The Shangde Solar Energy Power Co, the country's largest crystal silicon solar cell producer based in Pujiang Hi-tech Park, recently started its production line with 200-kilowatt silicon thin film solar cells in the base.
The global economic crisis made the silicon price nosedive last year, but general manager Chen Shaobin is quite optimistic. "We're very confident about the future of thin film cells. The market share of silicon solar cells is under 10 percent and the technique is still in its infancy stage and has great potential," he said.
In September, the group will relocate its research and development center for silicon thin film solar cells from Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, to the industrial park. In the next one or two years, the company plans to produce non-silicon solar cells, a technique it co-developed with other solar institutions.
The company is also planning to set up Shanghai's biggest individual building generating solar electrical energy.
The project, with an investment of 70 million yuan (US$10.3 million), will install 2.5-megawatt solar cells on the building's roofs, walls and grounds over an area of more than 30,000 square meters.
In addition to Shangde, Sinocome Group, one of the world's largest solar PV cell manufacturers and sellers, recently signed a contract with the Pujiang Hi-teck Park to which it will move its manufacturing base. Its production capacity will reach 500 megawatts.
According to a newly released report on the district's new energy development blueprint, the annual sales volume of Minhang's new energy industry is set to hit 25 billion yuan in 2012, with annual increases of 35 percent during 2009-2012.
So far, four Minhang-based solar enterprises -- Shanghai Solar Energy, Shanghai Topsolar Green Energy, Boneng Solar Energy and Perfectenergy -- have hit annual sales of 2.54 billion yuan.
Other new energy companies, such as nuclear and wind power, are also being encouraged to relocate. Currently, six energy R&D institutions, such as the Shanghai Clean Energy Development Center and the Shanghai Energy College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University have settled in the park.
By 2012, it will have an annual production capacity of 1 million kilowatts in various types of photovoltaic cell manufacturing.
