'Early detection, early treatment'
THE most prevalent cancers in Shanghai are those affecting the lungs, colon, stomach, liver and breasts, according to figures published during Shanghai Cancer Prevention Week at the Qibao Community Sanitation Center in Minhang District.
Annually, about 54,000 patients are newly diagnosed with malignant tumor in Shanghai. Of those, about 36,000 people die from the disease, which is the second leading cause of death in the city.
Colon cancer is on the rise, with 16 new patients diagnosed every day. The rise is attributed to an ageing population and changing lifestyles.
The theme of the cancer prevention week is: "Early detection, early treatment."
Beginning this month, community health service centers in Shanghai are providing free colon testing.
"This is really good news," said Wang Shun, a retired teacher in Minhang. "Early detection is vital to cancer treatment. The whole community is now aware of it."
