Early education facility a big hit
JINYING Early Education Center of Jiangchuan community is being repeatedly asked the same question since the winter vacation: "When will it open again?"
Most of the requests are from parents whose babies have already attended the center.
Although the first community early education center in Shanghai has only operated for one semester, it has attracted many young parents from Jiangchuan community.
Before 2009, the community had no professional early education institution. The job was done by kindergartens.
If young parents wanted their babies to get more professional attention, they had to deliver and pick them up in far away Xingzhuang.
To meet the need, the community decided to spend hundreds of thousands of yuan to convert a kindergarten into a professional early education center.
Its operation started last September and after one semester more than 1,300 children have benefitted.
When Xiao Zhou, for example, first attended, she was a lonely princess immersed in her own world, not wanting to talk to anyone. When she was given toys in class, she would not share them with other children.
Teachers in the center subsequently adapted their approach -- during class, every child now has to pass toys from one to another.
Xiao Zhou learned for the first time that when she gave her toy to one child, she could get another from others. It was her first experience of "sharing."
Teachers also suggested to her parents that she take more buses instead of private cars. After several weeks, the family found their daughter was becoming more polite.
The teachers said situations like Xiao Zhou's are very common among "only" children and such early education is necessary to help them learn communication and sharing with others.
