Eat well, sleep more and keep warm

"IF winter comes, can spring be far behind?"

While contemplating the words of the poet Shelley, there is plenty you can do to make the seasonal waiting period more healthy and happy.

Let's start with food. Lamb, beef, goose, ginger and nuts are some of the recommended foods that help restore energy and warm up the body in winter. Wolfberries (gouqi), red dates, fungus, sesame and walnuts are also considered great remedies in beating the winter cold.

Hot water and green tea are beneficial to health in any season but particularly in winter. Porridge with some nourishing ingredients like longyan, or "dragon eye" fruit, fish, sesame, radish and white fungus is a nourishing stalwart in winter.

Walking, jogging and soaking the feet in warm water will help improve blood circulation when it's cold.

When outdoors, make sure that your head, back and feet stay warm because they are especially vulnerable to chilly temperatures.

Cold can lead to headaches, lung infections, asthma, arthritis and other attacks on the immune system.

Bears do it. Getting lots of extra sleep in winter is good for the body. Make sure you have adequate ventilation.
