Eliminating traffic hazards
OVERLOADED trucks and drunk driving are two of the most hazardous risks on the roads in the Minhang District. Traffic police recently conducted a crackdown on both.
Ten roads in the Xinzhuang, Qibao and Hongqiao areas were targets of special operations involving thousands of traffic police.
One operation was set up at the crossroads of Longwu and Fanghe roads after a fatal accident there involving an overloaded truck. The truck, carrying steel products, tipped on its side, smashing a minivan. Two people in the van were killed.
“When a truck is overloaded, it may lose control when turning,” said one traffic officer. “Flat tires can also result. Both situations are very dangerous.”
Police said about 30 percent of trucks passing the site during the operation were deemed to be overloaded.
Violators were fined 200 yuan (US$31) each Many of the drivers said they knew they were breaking the law but needed to make more money by carrying extra weight.
Drunk driving is another serious road problem. During an operation at the crossroads of Hongmei and Jinmei roads, a drunk driver who tried to bribe the police to let him go was detained.
The police said the driver suddenly sped up and fled when they flagged down his car to give him a breathalyzer test. He was caught after a four-kilometer chase. When the officers tried to administer the alcohol test, the driver took a wad of cash from his pocket and offered it to the police, who refused the bribe.
The test showed that his alcohol content at 86 milligrams per 100 milliliters, far higher than the standard 50 milligrams. The driver was detained and his driving license was suspended, said the police.
