End of the road in sight

THE Shanghai-Hangzhou Expressway, or A8, is being expanded now, and work should be finished by the end of April.

The 18.5-kilometer section from Songjiang to Xinzhuang has been closed for the construction work and this is causing inconvenience for some drivers .

During the construction period, the Xinqiao-Xinzhuang section is closed except that buses are allowed to use it. Drivers from Songjiang have to find another route to get to Minhang and the city center.

But the Xinzhuang-Xinqiao section is open although restricted to two lanes with a 60-kilometer-per-hour speed limit.

The construction has put more traffic onto Xinsong Road as more cars have to leave the highway.

Traffic police have been reinforced at Xinzhuang's 12 road junctions, including on the Xinsong and Xinxi roads.

A changing lane has been added to the Xinsong Tunnel accommodating the traffic from the west to the east in the morning rush and going in the opposite direction in the evening rush.

Local traffic police suggest drivers go through Minhang during the period of construction.

? Cars driving from Hangzhou to Pudong can use the Hangzhou-Pudong Highway and transfer to the A4.

? Cars to the city center can go through the Zhajiasu Highway (Zhapu-Jiaxing-Jiangsu), then transfer to the Husuzhewan Highway (Shanghai-Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Anhui) and the take the A9 to Shanghai.

? Cars driving from Shanghai to Jiangsu Province can use the A30.
