Enjoying first hints of spring
The annual plum blossom exhibition has begun in Xinzhuang Park, offering visitors vivid color and fragrance. It’s a popular event for shutterbugs.
It attracted 20,000 visitors in its first weekend, despite foul weather.
The park features nearly 1,000 plum trees in 40 varieties, including several breeds that are very rare in Shanghai.
Be sure to view the pure-white terrace variety, which has milk white flowers dotted with red or pink spots. In the heart of each flower is a tiny terrace-shaped bud, which is unique.
Another rarely seen breed is the green-calyx plum. As the name implies, the calyx of the flower is green instead of red.
A bonsai plum is also a highlight of the park.
Half of the tree is already dead, with its branches twisting around like a coiled snake, while tiny flowers bloom on new-growth branches, conveying the continuity of life.
This year’s floral exhibition is themed around the Year of the Horse and features equine sculptures and lantern designs.
The floral exhibition runs to March 18.
