'Fame' musical set to hit the Shanghai stage

THE legendary series of "Fame," with its two Oscars, four Golden Globes and nine Emmys, has been wowing audiences for almost 30 years.

Now it will visit Shanghai from December 23 to January 3 in Shanghai City Theater.

The plot was created in 1980 and has been adapted into films, TV series and musicals which have won lots of honors and awards.

As the prototype of all Euro-American high-school musicals, "Fame" is one of the most successful stage shows in the history of entertainment.

The musical is based on stories about students at New York City's High School of Performing Arts who came from different family backgrounds, trying to realize their dreams to become a star.

Having gone through all kinds of challenges, some succeeded and some failed while some others learnt from the experiences and grew up.

In the end they came to realize that there was no other way to gain fame than through hard work, nonetheless everything they'd been through was worth it.

So far the musical has toured 25 countries including Australia, Denmark, Japan, Korea, Norway, Switzerland, South Africa, Germany, Italy, Finland, Estonia and Czechoslovakia.

Its homonymous theme song has also been adapted into various versions and has been a hit around the globe.

The musical will be staged at Shanghai City Theater by the Eastern Shanghai International Culture Film and Television Group.

It started its cooperation with the Shanghai City Theater constructor Minsheng Investment Development Limited Company.

Shanghai City Theater will also be presenting the comedy stage play "Balcony" created by the famous artist Chen Peisi who designed the play based on the life of commoners.

It starts with a migrant worker who can't get his legitimate pay for his work.

The story, though very funny amid the lines, moves the audience and calls for serious reflection.
