Family home through the camera lens

Lin Deming, a former resident of Caozhong Village in Meilong Town, uses his camera lens to capture the development of Minhang over 40 years from a doorstep perspective. In 1976, he photographed the house where his family lived. It looks shabby by today’s standards, but in its day, it was the house of a rich farm family.

Lin built a wedding house for himself with his grandfather, who was a carpenter. It cost him only a few thousand yuan. During rainy seasons, the walls and floors of the house would become very damp. In 2009, Lin’s family moved to Yintai community after the home was demolished under rural redevelopment. It was the first time the family lived in a high-rise building. We share some of Liu’s retrospective.
