Farmers find use for straw to benefit environment, economy

IN recent years, Shanghai has totally forbidden burning straw outdoors. And now, the autumn has come and Minhang has more than 1,146 hectares of paddy rice farms in the district, the question is when the harvest is over, how to deal with the straw?

The answer came at the 2010 Minhang Autumn Agriculture Conference held recently ¨? most of the straw will be crushed by reaper machines and become straw manure, and the remainder will be turned into soil conditioner through biological treatment.

Formally, farmers burned the straw directly in the field. It may have been the most convenient way, but what they didn't know was that it produced a lot of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide which severely polluted the air. Besides that, the burning also caused the rapid rising of the ground temperature of the field and killed beneficial microbes in the soil. In other words, it was very harmful for agriculture.

In Minhang District, policies forbidding straw burning have actually been carried out for years. This summer, Minhang produced 2,872 tons of straw, 2,716 tons have become manure, and 156 tons have been recycled for biological treatment.

This autumn, the dealing of straw takes place with the reaping of rice simultaneously.

In Pujiang Town, there are reaping machines equipped with crushing facilities. When the machines run through the field, most straw is broken into little pieces and are sowed directly into the field. On some other fields, the reaping machines don't crush the straw but have machines in tow to pick up the straw and pack it into blocks.

These straw blocks are then sent to the Chuangbo Agriculture Group's biological treatment center in Huibei Village, where the straw will be recycled. There's a pig farm near the center, and when pig excrement is mixed with straw and special cultures cultivated by the Chuangbo Group, they'll become a good soil conditioner after about 25 days' fermentation.

To prevent pollution, the entire fermentation process takes place in an airtight environment. According to the Chuangbo Group, this kind of soil conditioner can greatly improve the amount of organic matter and beneficial microbes in the soil, and the market price reaches about 650-750 yuan (US$98-US$112) per ton.

This year, only a small part of the straw has been involved in the recycling process. According to the Minhang environment protection department, in the future, there will be more straw involved in the biological treatment process because it's good for both environment and economy.

In the next year, Minhang will carry out the planting of about 670 hectares of ecological rice, with all the straw being recycled to make soil conditioner.
