Female prisoners try art of paper cutting
PRISONERS at Jingyi Female Studio recently learned the intricate art of paper cutting from paper cutting master Wang Chunying, a volunteer at Minhang Sports Park.
With the guidance of volunteers, beautiful "paper flowers" came out one after another.
Jingyi Female Studio is a service institution of Minhang Correction Work Station, which offers opportunities to female prisoners.
There are now 16 prisoners at the studio.
Every month, staff at the studio organize various activities to help inmates return to normal life.
And when many inmates expressed an interest in paper cutting, staff contacted Wang's studio for advice and lessons.
"We go to the paper cut studio every three months," says Lu Jing, a staff member at the institution.
Bao Lihua is a teacher at the paper cutting studio who has designed many original patterns. She provided tools and materials for her students.
"Every single artwork in the studio has its own name," says Bao. "And they reflect the beauty of life."
She remembers her first visit from the prisoners clearly.
"All their faces are full of smiles and they are very keen to learn. They are very clever, and some of them are even extremely talented at paper cutting," says Bao.
One member of Jingyi Female Studio is a girl surnamed Wang, who became depressed after being sentenced for running an illegal business.
However, paper cutting has given her a new lease of life, and she now designs and creates her own works.
