Film honors artist
IN 1935 a Chinese artist took his sculpture to Brussels, where the Expo was taking place. The sculpture "Matthew" still stands on the roof of the Centenary Palace which was the main exhibition hall for that event. Now, 75 years later, the Chinese artist, who died in 1998, again features at the Expo in a documentary about him which will be shown at the Expo Museum.
Zhang Chongren was from Qibao, Minhang, and he went to Belgium to study oil painting and sculpture. During his studies, the Expo 1935 was taking place in Brussels, and the grand Centenary Palace was built for it. On the roof of the palace there were four sculptures, and Zhang's work was one of them.
This time, the Expo will have an Expo museum for the first time. After learning that the museum was looking for documentaries on Chinese culture, Minhang Zhang Chongren Art Research Center and Zhang Chongren Memorial Museum made "China Zhang's Expo Story" and got it approved by the Expo Museum.
With two versions, in Chinese and English, it will tell the story of Zhang's life from his early days in Tushanwan Orphanage to his studies in China and Belgium and the many masterpieces he made during his lifetime.
The France Pavilion and Belgium Pavilion have also shown great interest in the documentary and during the Expo it may be also displayed in these two pavilions.
