Fishy barometer of water quality
THOUSANDS of fish and baby crabs were released into the ever-cleaner Puhuitang River this month during Qibao Town's annual ritual to embrace the spring and improve the environment.
Around 2,400 kilograms of young fish and 20,000 baby crabs were released early this month in one of Minhang District's fish-release projects.
This spring and summer the district plans to release about 19 tons of adult carp, six million young fish and 10,000 more baby crabs into rivers and streams.
"With more fish, the water is getting clearer," says Qibao resident Zheng Yanfang, who also attended last year's fish-release ceremony.
The Qibao Agricultural Station reports that water quality of the Puhuitang River has greatly improved since young fish were released last year.
