Fitness promotion project set
MORE than 1.8 million fitness cards have been distributed to residents in Minhang District, allowing free use of sports facilities at 92 local public schools.
First introduced in 2008, the fitness card can record exercise information about the cardholder, including location, date and frequency. The information can be checked online at ehr.mhwsw.com.
Residents will receive "health credits" according to how often they exercise.
The credits can be exchanged for various prizes, such as free entry to sporting events and concerts or purchase of sportswear.
"Exercising with rewards makes us more inclined to participate in sports," said Qiu Zhiguo, a local resident.
The Minhang Sports Bureau plans to promote the exercise regime eventually in 100 schools, investing 2 million yuan (US$320,600) a year in the program.
By the end of this year, the system will cover 31 schools.
The local government will also expand the system to cultural and sports centers in communities, fitness clubs and sports centers.
Exercise information will be linked with medical databases so that the fitness and health of Minhang residents can be monitored and research conducted.
The program is part of district plans to build an advanced fitness information management system. Six schools in the towns of Xinzhuang, Qibao and Gumei have been designated to participate in a pilot project.
