Flat fare lowers bus costs

MINHANG has reduced public transit fares for most people by imposing a flat rate of 2 yuan (31 US cents) on all buses running within the district, starting this month.

Last year, the district government allocated more than 80 million yuan as bus-fare subsidies after residents complained about high transit costs.

Huang Jiayin, who works on Qixin Road, isn't complaining anymore.

"In the past, I paid 6 yuan twice a day to commute between home and work," Huang said. "That got to be pretty expensive. The new fare cuts my cost by two-thirds, so I am very happy."

Bus No. 189, known as Xinji Line in the past, was the last to adopt the flat fare and abolish the zoned system based on distance traveled. The bus line formerly charged between 1 yuan and 6 yuan on its route.

The line, running between the Xinzhuang Metro Station and Jiwang Town, has more than 20 stops.

Many of the bus lines in Minhang run long distances to outlying areas. The longest routes, such as the Minhang No. 20, which links Pujiang and Xinzhuang towns and has 30 stops, used to charge a maximum 8 yuan for the whole distance.

Since 2005, 215 kilometers of new bus routes have been added to the district.
