Folk music jumps into the spotlight
MINHANG will host a number of folk music lectures, competitions and performances at Shanghai City Theater in an effort to promote one of China's oldest and most endearing cultural traditions.
The district wants to cultivate a folk music performance center at the theater, in conjunction with the Shanghai No. 1 National Musical Instruments Factory, located in Minhang's Qibao area.
It is difficult to find a theater in Shanghai that focuses on China's folk music, and the art form also lacks a stable troupe of performers, said Zhao Danni, the district's publicity minister.
"In Shanghai, where symphonic music, ballet, opera and musicals are flourishing, there should be a base for folk music performances," Zhao said.
Performers in the art will be invited to give public talks about their culture and play music at the theater every month. Every two months, a national or city-level folk music troupe will perform at the theater.
In July, a national competition of guzheng (Chinese zither) performers will be held at the theater, and a guzheng concert featuring 1,000 performers from across the nation will be staged in October.
Zhao Lei, who plays the erhu (two-stringed Chinese instrument), was the first in the new series of folk art performances. In addition to giving a talk on the instrument, he played famous music, including "Saima" and "Kongshan Niaoyu." He delighted audiences by playing Bach works transcribed for the erhu.
