Fresh fruit, vegetables weather heat

Food prices in Minhang markets have remained pretty stable this summer, despite record-breaking heat. Some newly opened food markets are even offering promotional discounts.
Prices of most seasonal vegetables — including carob, spinach, tarragon, tomatoes, water bamboo, amaranth and chilies — have dropped. Carob, for example, has been selling for 5 yuan (82 US cents) a kilo, 1 yuan cheaper than two months ago.
Egg prices climbed slightly, while fruit was generally cheaper.
“During the heat wave, a surplus of vegetables hit the market,” said the manager of Dushi Road Food Market. “That’s helped keep prices down. The hot weather has been good for most cultivation.”
On the other hand, prices of cruciferous vegetables, which are more heat intolerant, have been higher. Cabbage prices have almost doubled from spring to 4 yuan a kilo, while smaller Chinese leafy greens have risen to 6 yuan from 5 yuan a kilo.
With the end of bird flu season in June, eggs have climbed to 4.6 yuan per 500 grams from the previous 4.2 yuan, market managers said.
