Get into spring with a golden promenade

THERE is no better way to embrace the arrival of the spring than to walk through a sea of golden rape flowers.
Rape flowers have for centuries been used as fodder for farm animals and it's an important crop for the oil pressed from its seeds. Today they are the center of an annual outing for city dwellers who want to enjoy the bright yellow flowers as the temperature rises.
Abundant in fresh air and green scenery, towns such as Wujing, Maqiao and Pujiang in Minhang provide city people not only with large areas of gorgeous golden rape flowers but also a peaceful place for relaxation away from the busy city.
Near the Water Culture Park in Pujiang Town, large patches of rape flowers are coming into bloom this month, and this has attracted many newly-wed couples who shoot their wedding photos there.
If you want to have fun in some remote villages, you might be surprised by the 13.3-hectare rape flower area near the Dongchuan Road, close to the Zizhu Science and Hi-tech Park.
Along the Kunyang, Yuanjiang and Guanghua roads, you can also see some other wild flowers such as chrysanthemum and jasmine blooming.
If you don't want to travel that far to see the flowers, the Minhang Sports Park might be a good choice.
Last year, the park tried to plant a 1,333-square-meter rape flower field. Though not as big as those seen in remote areas, it can be a good place for parents and children to pick up some basic agricultural knowledge.
Children are encouraged to take part in a "Guess-Guess" game in the planting area, where they have to try and tell the difference between a variety of flowers, vegetables and fruits, all slightly resembling something different.
