Get smart! Living in the technology age

MINHANG resident Xiao Anli found a new lease on life in July, after her home was linked up to the district's Intelligent Community project.

An arm of the Intelligent Minhang program, the project now serves more than 300 households and counting.

Xiao lives in the Gumei Road Community, where she is now hooked up to Internet Protocol TV. Every morning the retiree searches for weather information and traffic conditions on her television.

Before going shopping, the TV also informs her of the latest prices of vegetables, fruits and meat. When she doesn't feel like going out, she can order groceries through TV and the local supermarket delivers them to her door.

"Life has become so much more convenient," Xiao said. "I can even register for outpatient services at home."

Co-designed by Shanghai Telecom, the Intelligent Community project aims to establish an online platform for public services. It currently displays 13 items on the IPTV menu, such as medical care, household services, public utility information and weather forecasts.

People can choose the service they want with their remote controller.

In the next three years, the Intelligent Minhang project is expected to cover all basic urban management services, including medical care, traffic, government assistance and education.

Even at this early stage, Minhang residents are noticing the benefits that a smart community brings.

For example, nearly 100 intersections in Minhang are now equipped with traffic lights that are automatically controlled by traffic flows. Traffic authorities said motoring speeds have been raised by up to 8 percent.

Starting this month, 4,000 students in Minhang have started using e-textbooks. They no longer have to tote heavy books on their backs to classes.

The district government said the Intelligent Minhang project is expected to be widely implemented by 2015. By that time, residents are also expected to enjoy complete optical fiber and 3G networks. This year, the number of wi-fi hotspots will be significantly increased.

"The essence of Intelligent Minhang is to deliver high-quality services to people and provide government with technological management tools," said Sun Chao, Party secretary of Minhang District.
