Glowworms light nightime excursion
MORE than 60 alumni of a Minhang school hiked around Shanghai's major source of drinking water to observe glowworms this month as part of a campaign to promote environmental protection.
The glowworm is now quite rare in metropolitan Shanghai because city lights have damaged the insect's natural environment.
On the night of July 16, graduates from Qibao High School headed to Cenbu village, a remote farming area that was voted one of Shanghai's most scenic rural villages in a citywide contest in 2011.
Located on Dianshan Lake in the northwestern district of Qingpu, Cenbu is said to be the best place in the city to observe glowworms for a brief few weeks every year.
Dots of lights
The hiking party walked more than 5.5 kilometers in silence through the village area, stopping at spots where dots of lights were seen dancing above the water or in brushes.
Some hikers couldn't muffle their delight at seeing the small lights flitting about.
Those taking photos did so without flashes.
"The stars were so beautiful and the glowworms likewise," said graduate Yu Yini of the nighttime adventure. "I've learned to appreciate Mother Nature."
Chen Xingyan, president of Qibao High School Alumni Union, who organized the hiking trip, said the event was held to give city folks the chance to appreciate the wonders of the natural environment and to help bond the alumni as a group.
The Alumni Union, founded in March, has attracted 723 members. Next month, some of the members plan to visit western China for a week to meet with students from ethnic minorities, according to Ge Yisen, a union member who is now a sophomore at East China Normal University in Minhang.
