Graduate women join armed police
SHANGHAI Armed Police Base in Minhang District recently welcomed a new batch of soldiers -- all female university graduates, the first time the city has recruited well-educated women to build a better quality army.
The armed police base will be the home for the new soldiers over the next two years.
"This is my first time training girls, and they're doing quite well," said Zhang Kai, the base's deputy political commissar.
"They are well-educated, quick to learn and more self-disciplined than I thought."
The exact size of the force and number of women have not been disclosed.
Most of the young women are from Shanghai, but they are banned from visiting their families at home during weekends and holidays.
In addition, they can't use mobile phones. And Internet access is also forbidden.
"Military training is their top priority and they have no time to do girlish things as they do at home," said Zhang.
