Green Expo buses pave road for new technology

THREE kinds of eco-friendly buses will be used to transport visitors around next year's World Expo in Shanghai, meeting goals of zero emissions at the site.

Most of the buses will be made in Minhang District.

The super-capacitor powered buses, pure electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles will transport visitors to the site and around the area.

Shanghai Sunwin Bus Co in the Xinzhuang Industrial Zone recently won the contract to provide 300 or 400 new buses powered by super-capacitors. Super-capacitor-powered buses will run in the 3.28-square-kilometer Expo site. These electric-powered buses can be recharged within seconds with enough electricity to run for 3 to 5 kilometers with no exhaust and zero emissions.

Comparing with earlier electric buses now running on downtown route No. 11, the buses that Sunwin makes for the Expo will feature larger battery capacity, shorter charging time, greater instantaneous currents and longer operating time.

The Expo site is divided into two sections at Puxi and Pudong.

In addition to Metro trains and ferries, electric buses capable of running 150-200 kilometers on a single charge will serve as cross-river transport.

Hybrid buses will run around the Expo area. Sunwin's new hybrid buses can save fuel of nearly 30 percent. After the Expo, Sunwin plans to sell the hybrid buses on the national market.
