Greenbelt for public recreation
A new 3.8-kilometer forested greenbelt is expected to open to the public in the second half of the year, according to the Minhang District Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.
The parkland, which will stretch from Mincheng Road to the Liuleitang area at widths of up to 110 meters, will cover nearly 30,000 square meters.
It will include paved walkways, bike lanes and a fitness trail, with bridge links to surrounding residential areas.
Landscaping, including sculptures and plants, will be added to create a soothing environment, said the bureau.
Initial construction work will be completed by the end of June, and the greenbelt is expected to open to the public in July or August.
Officials said the greenbelt will incorporate trees planted in 2004, which have grown considerably in height.
“The trees were originally planted as a buffer to improve the ecology of the area,” said an official with the bureau, who declined to be identified. “But now, we find an increasing public need for green zones, so we are turning the woods into a public-use area.”
Although this is the largest project of its kind ever undertaken in Minhang, it is not the first. A riverside greenway was built along the Hejingbang and Dianpu rivers in 2012, linking the Xinzhuang and Gumei areas. It has become a popular route for walkers.
“We realize that the greenery areas in the district are a bit fragmented and isolated from one another,” said the bureau official. “So we are trying to link some of them up where possible.”
