Gumei residents helping needy children from afar
THE Gumei No. 3 community recently received a letter from some students from the Yulong Primary School in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan, expressing gratitude for help provided by the residents of Gumei.
Residents of Gumei have been conducting a three-year campaign to send needy children in an impoverished area near the Dali City of Yunnan gifts and money.
A retired couple, Yuan Junshan and Liu Shixia, donated 10 Chinese dictionaries, and retired schoolteacher Wang Jianru donated 200 yuan (US$29). Other items sent to the children included stationery and clothing.
The neighborhood committee of Gumei recently posted a notice informing residents that the annual donation drive has started again. Within several days, 220 notebooks and 31 pieces of clothing flowed into the committee offices.
"Without any particular promotion, the residents have responded with their usual warm hearts," said He Lihua, Party secretary of the committee.
Zhu Xiuming, a geography teacher, donated books.
"I know some places in the mountainous region are poor and backward, and I just hope to contribute my love and concern," she said.
The donation campaign started after Wei Shourong, a Gumei resident, visited that area of Yunnan three years ago. He visited several schools, where he saw financial hardship and students having to walk more than 5 kilometers over hilly terrain to get to school. He found the local diet at subsistence levels.
The experience motivated him into action when he returned home. At first, it was just Wei and a few senior citizens who donated books and clothing to the children in Yunnan, but gradually the campaign snowballed to include the participation of the whole community.
Even the local post office chipped in by offering to send care packages to Yunnan free every year.
