Help for the handicapped brings richer lives and more mobility

DISABLED persons in Minhang will receive more help, including improvement of handicap facilities and more social services from communities, according to the Minhang District Disabled Persons’ Federation.

Barrier-free facilities, including wheelchair passageways and bathroom fixtures, will be installed in the homes of 500 families with disabled members.

The first feedback from the new program has been positive, said the federation.

Cao Jiawen, 22, who was paralyzed in a medical procedure, said new fixtures in the bathroom have been especially helpful to him. A bathtub he couldn’t use was removed, and a shower stall, with shower chair, was put in its place. A sliding door to the bathroom replaced the hinged one.

“I seldom took bath before because every time it exhausted me and my family,” said Cao. “It was difficult to move me into the bathtub.”

Access to Cao’s apartment was also improved with the installation of a ramp, and handrails were increased on the right walls of every room.

“The handrails allow me to do some recovery exercises,” said Cao. “Before the changes, I could only sit in my wheelchair and do nothing at home.”

According to the federation, about 24,640 disabled people live in Minhang, comprising 2 percent of the population.

Volunteers in Minhang are also giving free services to the handicapped. Volunteers with the program “I Am Your Eyes” accompany the blind to movies and give a running narrative about what is on the screen.

In the past three years, 92 volunteers have narrated 60 movies to more than 5,000 people.

The latest movie they narrated was “London Has Fallen” earlier this month.

“From feedback, we know that our movie program has become an important entertainment for the blind,” said Zhu Yanjin, a program volunteer.

The federation is currently working to organize a similar movie experience for the deaf.
