Heroes honored

FOUR Anhui natives who were stabbed while stopping a gang of thieves from robbing two women on a bus in Minhang have been honored for their heroism.

The rescuers each received 1,000 yuan (US$146) from the district government and had their medical fees paid.

The incident happened on January 3 on a No. 729 bus when it stopped on Xinzhu Road. A group of assailants rushed onto the bus and tried to grab two women's bags, police said.

Wang Dong, his brother and two classmates who were on the bus saw the attack and intervened to try to stop the robbers. Wang was pulled off the bus and beaten by the gang.

One of the gang members pulled out a knife and wounded the other three rescuers as they sought to help Wang, according to the police account.

Eight suspects of the gang were captured and arrested. Police said they were from the city of Chongqing in southwestern China and had prior robbery records.
