Historic buildings gain protection

TWELVE historic sites have recently been listed on Minhang's sixth batch of cultural heritage for protection.

The new list includes Qin Bowei's Former Residence (Qin was a famed TCM master), Qiyi People's Commune, Zhongxing Bridge and Zhao Yuanchang's Residence.

Qin's residence found in the remote Chenhang area in Pujiang Town can be dated back to the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Covering 5,000 square meters, it is one of the largest groups of old buildings discovered south of Shanghai. Five families still live there today with many Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties furnishings.

The old complex features white-washed walls, gray roofing tiles and bricks, carved wooden gates, stained glass and faded couplets pasted on weather-beaten posts.

Zhongxing Bridge in Pujiang Town's Xianjin Village was built in 1758 and was renovated in 1926.

The flat-slab bridge was made of granite in a traditional Chinese design. It is 13.65 meters long and 1.1 meters wide, running from southeast to northwest over the Pudajing River.

The bridge is still in use today and works very well.

Another highlight of the list is Lianyong Hall in Qibao Temple. Constructed in the late Qing Dynasty and covering an area of 510 square meters, the hall is a bungalow with a courtyard in the center.

The hall was used as a place for worshipping Buddha in ancient times past but now it is a room to display scientific exhibits at Qibao No. 2 Middle School.
