Historic watertown opens travel links
The ancient town closest to the World Expo site, Zhaojialou Town in Pujiang Town, Minhang District, reopened on May 28 after three years of extensive rebuilding.
The renovated Zhaojialou will be an ecological watertown, according to Pan Jinping, Party secretary of Pujiang Town.
And in the near future, the town's water channel may be linked with Metro lines. Visitors will get to the town by boat after travelling by Metro line, providing a unique tourism experience.
Zhaojialou, also called Zhaolou, has been a town of agricultural importance throughout history.
It first thrived in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), when it was the cradle of Shanghai's agriculture. After centuries of development, it eventually became a typical Jiangnan watertown.
Now, as one of the 32 key historic cultural protection zones of Shanghai, it retains various ancient constructions, bridges and water channels from both the Ming and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.
The completed renovation is just the first part of the entire project.
It covers about 40,000 square meters of historical constructions, mainly concentrating on two memorial museums and several streets.
Qinyubo Memorial Museum and Yezongxing Memorial Museum have all been renovated according to their original style.
Four streets along the river, Pingxi Street, Baonan Street, Baobei Street and Nan Street, have also been kept in their ancient style.
On the other side, buildings along the Yaojiabang River were too old to keep.
They had to be removed but have been rebuilt with their original materials.
The first stage of the project has already made this old town popular among Shanghai residents and there is high anticipation for the ensuing stages.
Pan said the highlight of the second stage will be the renovation of another great construction of the old town, the Mei Garden, with 99 rooms.
After the renovation, it will become an innovative cultural garden and retain its original residential function.
In addition, the administration is planning to connect two lakes -- Chen Lake in the south and Tan Lake in the north -- into one water system.
This will provide perfect environment for recreational boating.
By that time, the water system of Zhaojialou will be connected to Puxing Road where Metro Line 8 passes, and the Metro-water link to get into the town will no longer be a dream.
For the third stage, the "Reclaiming Plaza" will become a landmark of the entire Pujiang Town region.
"I'm pretty sure that this landmark will be a very magnificent construction, just like the famous Yueliang Pavilion and Tengwang Pavilion," says Pan.
