Hospital building begins
CONSTRUCTION has started on the new 356 million yuan (US$59.2 million) branch of the Fudan University's Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital.
Located in Pujiang Town, the 500-bed medical facility will mainly serve the 1.8 million population of Minhang District.
The hospital, which will cover 126,500 square meters when completed, will incorporate medical treatment, education and scientific research, specializing in diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat.
The first stage of the hospital, accounting for about half of the structure's floor space, is expected to be completed in 2013.
Minhang District and Fudan University signed an agreement for construction of the hospital at the end of last year. Talks on the new hospital began two years ago, after Fudan opened a branch of the Children's Hospital in Minhang.
Sun Xinghuai, director of the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University, called the agreement a "win-win situation" at the signing ceremony.
"The new branch provides an unprecedented opportunity for the hospital's future development and will offer a higher standard of medical care for people living in Minhang," Sun said.
The Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University, established in 1952, is the only first class 3A hospital of its kind in China. The main facility is located on Fenyang Road in the Xuhui District and has just shy of 400 beds.
The hospital treated 1.6 million outpatients in 2009 and 21,715 inpatients. As many as 50,000 patients a year undergo surgery in the hospital every year, about two-thirds of them from out-of-town.
The hospital, Sun said, can't meet demand anymore. Some patients have to wait almost a year for elective surgeries. That's why the new facility in Minhang is so critical to the hospital's future, he said.
The district government said it will upgrade transportation links to the new hospital.
