Household robots the target for new center

THE recent launch of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University-Panasonic Joint Research Center at the university's Minhang campus marked the start of high-tech research into making a household robot.

Currently the research center is working on robots for the World Expo 2010 Shanghai. Experts from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University said they are studying robots which can play instruments, avoid obstacles, serve as guides and do some cleaning. As well as working for the World Expo, the high-tech robots could be used in civilian life.

"Household robots are closely tied to the lives of people," said Cao Zhaomin, director of the research center. "Some specialized robots, like intellectualized wheelchairs, will play an important role in supporting the aging population."

The research center will also research household appliances and design homes for the future. More than 10 sections including environmentally friendly and energy-saving home appliances and temperature-control technologies are involved.

University students will be organized to research and study at the center to cultivate talent.
