Improving conditions in migrant apartments

XINZE Sunny Housing, the first apartment complex built especially for migrant workers, was recently renovated to improve the living condition of residents.
Rooms in the complex, located near the Xinzhuang Industrial Zone, were restructured to make them larger, and bathrooms were modernized. The changes will entail only a slight increase in rents, according to the developers.
“The apartment my company originally rented for me held eight people,” said Liu Xiu, a worker from Shanxi Province. “It was a bit crowded, to be honest, but the rent was only 100 yuan (US$16) a month. Now the apartment has been restructured to accommodate only six people and it’s much roomier.”
Yin Xialu, a new graduate from Jiangsu Province, said she was pleased that bathroom fittings were upgraded. Hot water for showers used to be limited and was sometimes unavailable at certain hours, she said.
The complex, an investment of the industrial zone, is still under construction. When the last of the three phases is completed, it will accommodate more than 9,800 people.
Currently, more than 3,400 migrant workers are living in apartments for two, four or six people. The complex typically signs contracts with companies to provide employee living space. Rents are often subsidized by companies.
Fifteen companies have formed a neighborhood committee in the complex to enhance management and gather feedback from residents.
“With the help of the committee, we are able to organize activities in the neighborhood, such as photography exhibitions and decor competitions,” said Du Lihong, an official with the complex developer.
