In pursuit of better food quality
A NEW contract system between food producers and online take-out food services in Minhang District aims to give consumers legal safeguards against poor food quality.
The contract, now in a trial program, come after numerous cases were reported throughout China about some online meal-delivery companies buying food from underground producers and selling it as food from legitimate restaurants.
Drafted by the Minhang District Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau, the contract delineates the obligations of both food providers and meal-delivery companies.
The delivery companies must shoulder the responsibility for vetting the businesses they buy food from to verify legal business and health licenses. They are also responsible for monitoring supplier sources to ensure the food safety.
The companies have the right to break the contracts of any producers found to be using forged licenses or violating food-safety rules.
Although the contract is not compulsory, the two largest online meal-delivery services — ele.me and dianwoba.com — have adopted it.
“It provides very detailed terms on food safety, including raw material sources, food processing and delivery,” said Shen Tao, president of dianwoba.com.
The Minhang District Market Surveillance Bureau said it will monitor the situation to ensure that contract terms are met.
