Indulge yourself! Festival offers oodles of fun and entertainment
MINHANG District is set to host its second annual Tourism and Shopping Festival, promising that the event will be bigger and better than last year.
The festival, to be held from September 3 to October 7, will be a cornucopia of food, arts, lanterns, photography, shopping, books, music, folk arts and fashion. A parade of floats along Xinzhen Road on September 24 will be among the highlights of the fair.
"Unlike the first tourism festival held in Minhang last year, we will expand this year's event across the district and get more people involved," said Chen Jian, deputy director of the Minhang Tourism Bureau.
The opening ceremony will take place at 7pm on September 3 in the Shanghai City Theater on Dushi Road with a concert by the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra.
During the ceremony, a new website promoting Minhang's tourism attractions will be launched.
"Interaction will be a hallmark of this festival," Chen said. "Visitors will be invited to explore the charms of the district, past and present, and to see the inspiration we draw from the integration of urban and rural areas within Minhang's boundaries."
A photographic exhibition will serve as a prelude to the annual fair. From August 28 to September 3, entries in a month long photography contest will be on display at the Zhongshen World Shopping Mall in the Xinzhuang area.
The winners among the nearly 100 entries will be announced on August 28. There will also be works by professional photographers on display.
"I shot the beautiful landscape of the two famed water towns, Zhaojialou and Qibao, night views of the Jinjiang Amusement Park and close-ups of people in the district to showcase its beauty and vitality," said Zhou Ping, who will have about six works on display at the exhibition.
Zhou, who works for Shanghai Enjoy Photo Travel Service Ltd, organizer of the exhibition, spent about a month in the district trying to capture its essence on film.
Zhaojialou Old Town, a tranquil water town in the Pujiang area, will be dressed up with red lanterns in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, which will fall on September 12 this year.
Recreating the rituals of centuries, visitors will be invited to worship the moon, savor mooncakes, light their own lanterns and guess at traditional riddles in the town on September 10.
"I missed the event last year, and I hope to get involved this time because there are more things going on and the events look alluring," said Fang Leqi, a resident living in the Xinzhuang area. He said he and his girlfriend are looking forward to visiting Zhaojialou because they have never been in the town before.
The Qibao area, famed for its water scenery and specialty foods, will ask visitors to vote on which local snacks they like best on an event scheduled on September 17. Voters can dig into deep-fried tofu and crabapple cake before casting their ballots.
Hongmei Leisure Street, popularly known as Foreigners Street 101, will host a German music and beer festival during September 22 to 24, accompanied by an array of German cuisine.
The street, which runs half a kilometer, features restaurants specializing in food from around the world, including Korean, Indian, Iranian, French, Dutch, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese.
On October 1, the Cricket House in Minhang's Qibao area will host a cricket-fighting competition.
Chi Qiang, who is in charge of event, said cricket buffs are encouraged to sign up for the event, but reminded participants to steer clear of wearing any scents because crickets are allergic to the smell of perfume.
A book fair will be held from September 10 to 31 at Xinduhui, a business complex in Minhang's Meilong area. Books will be sold at discount prices.
The festival is a haven for shopaholics.
A number of online shops, whose owners live or work in Minhang, will offer discounts on Taobao.com, a popular e-commerce platform, during the festival. Businesses on Longming Leisure Street will also be discounting prices during the festival.
The Zhongshen World Shopping Mall will celebrate its two-year anniversary with a fashion show and discount prices between September 18 and October 7.
Last year's tourism festival attracted thousands of people from home and abroad, according to the tourist bureau's Chen.
"We can't tell how many people will come this time, but the more, the merrier," she said.
The festival is sponsored by the Minhang Tourism Bureau, with assistance from local tourism sites such as Qibao Old Town, Zhaojialou Old Town, Dino Beach, Yinqixing Skiing Site, Shanghai City Theater and Jinjiang Amusement Park.
