Infant scalded in a landlord, tenant dispute

POLICE arrested a landlord after a household dispute that left a 16-month-old baby badly burned by boiling water.

Doctors treating the infant said he was scalded over 35 percent of his body but the injuries aren’t life-threatening. He will need future surgery, however, they said.

According to the police account of the incident, the baby’s father, surnamed Li, and his wife frequently had disputes with their landlord, a 25-year-old man surnamed Lin, at the apartment they rented on Xinlong Road. The disputes were usually of a minor nature.

However, after a recent blow-up, Li’s wife went outside to check on something, and the landlord, who stayed behind in the apartment, slammed the door and locked her out. She hadn’t taken her key.

The wife peered in the window and saw the landlord take a kettle of boiling water into the baby’s room. Then she heard the baby screaming.

The infant was rushed to the Armed Police Corps Hospital of Shanghai.

Li told police he and his wife had always found Lin a bit “weird.” Police said an investigation into the incident is continuing.
