'Iron Man' wins another case

HE Yimin has just finished his eighth round of radiotherapy, and it has been three months since a tumor the size of a fist was cut out of his lower body. Three nuclear magnetic resonances later have not found any cancer cells, which means the operation was a big success.

He still can't sit up for too long. His wife often reminds him not to get too tired. However, when talking about the cases he solved, he never gets tired.

He feels proud as he was the backbone of his team -- Minhang Vice Squad. He created a service record -- one month away from home and three days without sleep. His teammates often called him "Iron Man."

But in the end, he was not made of iron. He suffered from hemorrhoids for a long time but he had little time for treatment after work.

Last March, when he was in Guangzhou on a case, the hemorrhoids flared suddenly and seriously. His colleagues suggested he go to see the doctor as soon as possible, but he refused. "How about the case? Forget it?"

This July, for a murder case, he spent days and nights at the crime scene despite suffering a high temperature. The case was finally solved but He also came down with a severe hemorrhoids attack.

The second day after the case was solved, he went to hospital and rectum cancer was diagnosed. And on the third day, he was hospitalized.

For all he did for his career, He never regrets. It has always been his dream to chase criminals, but he cannot count how many cases he has solved since he became a policeman in 1999. He remembers only the big cases.

A murder in Qibao area was one of them. To chase the suspect, he went to Wenzhou with his colleagues and lay in wait where the suspect might show up, which cost him three sleepless days and nights.

He never left the car and bread was his only food. His effort was not in vain. The suspect appeared and was caught on the morning of the fourth day.

In the following inquest, He learned that if they missed that chance, the suspect would have slipped overseas.

"No miss, nor mistake" is He's principle. Last May 24, a man's body was found near the Dongchuan Rd Stop of Metro 5.

The victim's cell phone and bicycle were gone as well. He caught a suspect surnamed Zhou who at the inquest confessed to the crime.

But he said the murder weapon was a hammer, different from what the police believed.

This difference made He go back to the scene for further investigation and his final conclusion was: when the victim was murdered, Zhou was not at the scene. Without He's careful work, it could have been be a huge mistake.

The later investigation found the real murderers were the victim's wife and her lover. Zhou was just the thief. He admitted the murder charge just because he felt not able to prove his innocence.

Becoming a policeman, He spends most of time in other places and his wife does all the housework. Even in Shanghai, he is always busy at work. So when cancer was confirmed, he worried not about himself, but his family.

The night before the operation when He was telling his wife how to put the house in order in case he did not survive, tears suddenly flowed from this iron man's eyes. However, he still has a strong wife.

"Could you leave us? Could you leave your teammates?" said his wife. "There are so many rectum cancer patients living well, why couldn't you?"
