Jade Rabbit is a Minhang ‘native’
The Minhang District watched with pride when China’s Jade Rabbit rover vehicle landed on the moon and began sending back pictures.
The rover was designed at the Shanghai Academy of Space Technology in Minhang. A team there had been working on it since 2008. The rover runs on solar power, but special technology had to be designed for solar and lithium ion batteries to survive sharp temperature gradients. To handle the surface of the moon, each of the six wheel hubs of the lunar rover were made from rare metals and shaped like small lanterns.
Minhang has played a significant role in China’s space program. Its scientists and engineers designed the propelling module for the Shen Zhou spaceship series and the docking mechanism of the Tian Gong 1 Target spacecraft.
