Jade master puts on Golden Week show
AS the Mid-Autumn Festival is approaching, the happy holiday mood pervades the whole country and the city is also bathed in a joyous festival mood.
During the eight-day Golden Week, a jade show will light up Nanfang Friendship Shopping Center, through to October 11.
The exhibition will showcase dozens of precious jade carving items, engraved in Chinese ink brush, daffodil and Guanyin Bodhisattva, among others.
The pieces have been collected or carved by Hong Ronghui, China's jade engraving master from Yangmei Village in Guangdong Province, the country's jade capital.
On October 3, Hong will give a lecture on how to appreciate jade stones and assess jade items, pearls and jewels brought by visitors.
In addition, a stone auction will be held that day, often called by jade hunters "stone gamble." More than 10 stones will be auctioned.
Jade buyers "gamble" on the rough stones they auction from the market. It is a high-stakes gamble because it is only after the auction that the stone can be split, which could be a plain stone worth nothing, or the buyer could be very fortunate to find imperial green quality inside that can make one a millionaire overnight.
Hong once successfully auctioned a giant stone for 80,000 yuan (US$11,764) and unearthed a huge slab of jade inside, which earned him over 3 million yuan later.
