Ji's labor of love will chart your route to Expo

JI Xiaoyu is holding a map of Shanghai in his hand, but it's quite different to the usual ones -- the red lines on the map are Metro lines, green buses indicate the nonstop buses to the Expo site, and those green lines are the bus routes which will reach the Expo site ?

If you had such a clear map of how to get to the Expo, would you consider giving up driving there and taking public transport instead?

That's what Ji, a grade two student at Qibao High School, is hoping.

He has made this practical Expo traffic map in the hope that visitors will get to the Expo Park in the greenest possible way.

Ji has been a geography fan since childhood and he's a member of the geography explorers club at his school.

During last summer vacation he decided to make the map and launched a survey of more than 400 teachers and students on what information they most wanted.

Through the survey, Ji found that besides the traffic routes, information on Expo pavilions, catering, tourism, shopping and hotels was also of great concern.

However, such information could not be easily found on the maps on the market.

Firstly, Ji marked the traffic information on a standard map, and then hand-painted his new one.

After that, he put all the other related information on his map, and got them colored. Finally, he used the computer to finish off the work.

The map is composed of three parts -- the bus routes, Metro routes and a map of the Expo site.

All the Expo bus stops and directions are clearly marked, and unnecessary information has been erased to make the essential details stand out.

In addition, different areas are painted in different scales, according to their importance, which makes the map "thinner" and easier to carry.

After being revised and modified again and again, the map is finally done -- an enterprise that took Ji over six months to finish. However, that's still not enough for Ji.

"I'm still not completely satisfied with my map," says Ji, "My next job is to collect more information, especially on the exact locations of Expo pavilions in the site and a new map will be worked out."

Over 5,000 copies of Ji's map have been printed with the support of Qibao High School, and they have been sent out to students and teachers in the school and local residents free of charge.
