Library opens with new books and services

THE newly built Minhang Library opened on March 30 with over 170,000 books available to borrow.

The newspaper reading room is now open from 9am to 4:30pm every Tuesday to Sunday and 1pm to 4:30pm every Monday, and the book borrowing service is available from 9am to 4:30pm every Tuesday to Sunday.

The new library is open from the first floor to the third. Readers with the Shanghai Library all-purpose card can borrow books on the first floor. Those who have the former Minhang Library card can change it to a Shanghai Library card at no cost.

The first day of the formal opening was busy and although it was scheduled to trade from 9am, the library actually opened before 9 because of the long queue of readers outside. Minhang readers had waited for more than three months since the old Minhang Library was closed.

"We've been expecting this new library for a long time," said a woman reader surnamed Liu. "I've monitored its progress through the Internet and newspapers since it was constructed, and now it's finally in service." On the first day, she applied for two cards, for her daughter and herself.

All 170,000 books, including 130,000 general titles and 40,000 children's books, have been purchased for the reopening. All the borrowing areas are also for reading, with over 400 seats and 40 computers at which readers can not only search for books, but also look for online information about the library.

In addition to books, the library will also provide readers with some special services such as an electronic reading room, foreign language reading room and intangible cultural heritage reading room. A further 100 computers will be installed in the electronic reading room for readers and they'll be free to use.

Wireless Internet is also being established and will be available free once installed. Automated book borrowing and return machines are being tested. Once operating, it will be the first library at district level in Shanghai using this technology.
