Library relocated and services started

LOCATED now in Chunshen Cultural Plaza, the new Minhang Library started trial operations on January 18 after moving from the original library site on Qixing Road.

Although not all the moving and preparation work has been completed, part of the library services are already working well.

The new reading room for newspapers and magazines is operational as one of the first sections opened on the first day of relocation.

It's located on the first floor of the library and offers about 200 seats for readers inside the room.

"It's now totally free for all readers, domestic and foreign," said Xu Hong, a librarian of Minhang Library.

"For the current period, you even don't need a library card. The only rule is you cannot damage or take out anything."

Xu said the open reading room has collected over 700 kinds of newspapers and over 250 kinds of magazines, including almost all the daily and evening papers of China which are renewed regularly.

Apart from the reading room, an upright reading machine with touchable screen is also available.

It contains over 20 kinds of major newspapers from all around China, including Ta Kung Pao of Hong Kong.

Readers can access all the pages inside every newspaper, and they're automatically renewed everyday.

The library is expected to be formally opened to the public in the spring, with all the reading rooms and functions operational.

At that time, a library card of Shanghai Library will also be usable.

More services including free scanning and printing eventually will be available.
