Li's day to remember: a rare city honor and a daughter to cherish
THE 24-year-old Li Congyang from Yunnan Province will never forget April 1, and not because of an April Fool's joke -- on that day, just after he sent his wife to the delivery room, he hurried to the Worker's Cultural Palace of Changning District to get an award --"Excellent Migrant Worker of Shanghai."
According to the regulation, he could get the permanent residence registration of Shanghai with his honor, and his daughter, who was born on the same day, also got her registration automatically.
It was the first "Excellent Migrant Worker" awards ceremony in Shanghai, and five migrant workers from Minhang District, including Li, received the honor. In addition, 15 migrant workers from the district were honored as "model individuals."
Eighty percent of Minhang's excellent migrant workers and model individuals work at the frontline of production.
Li was the youngest of all the migrant workers who received the award in Shanghai.
After he came to the city and started work at the Shanghai Heavy Machine Factory in February 2003, he worked hard to learn professional technologies and increase his basic knowledge.
Currently, he's the group leader of his department. The other "excellent migrant workers" from Minhang are Mao Xiangrong, Lu Guangpeng, Zheng Qifang and Zhou Luyong.
It's not an easy award to get. All five had won other honors previously and their professional skills are of the highest level.
"It's not only because of their efforts, but also due to the recent adjustment of industrial restructuring in Minhang," said an official with the local administration.
"In recent years, Minhang has stressed the development of high-tech industries, which has cultivated a young and skillful labor force.
"These 20 workers are just a small section of that labor force," said the official, "and there are a lot of excellent workers behind them."
