Local service industry industry
EXPERTS and government officials gathered in Minhang District recently to brainstorm how to develop the district's service industry. The seminar was themed on restructuring and modern service economy.
Minhang is strong in manufacturing industry, which is an advantage for the development of the producer service sector, said Tao Youzhi, a research fellow with the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.
Hu Jiling, vice president of the Shanghai Economic Management College, said Minhang should grasp the opportunity of the construction of the Hongqiao transport hub to develop its service industry as part of the hub is located at the district.
Shanghai is accelerating its construction of an international trade center, which will require a large number of professionals in the service industry, he said. The hub will be one of the world's largest of its kind, where daily foot traffic may reach 1.1 million to 1.4 million on average by 2015.
Developing service industry relies on human resources. Minhang's total population doubled in the last decade to 2.42 million, making it the city's second fastest-growing district and second most populous.
Because the number of nonresidents are almost on par with permanent residents, there are views that it is not a positive element for the growth of service industry. While Zhu Jinhai, vice president of the Shanghai Economist Association, had different views.
"Migrant population in Minhang peaked in 2006, and tend to be stable in recent years, meaning the majority of them have settled down in the district," he said. "Therefore, the district government should provide more training for young migrants to meet the need of its development of service industry, at the same time, it should boost consumption based on their purchasing habits."
