Lower-cost rental units give youth comfy digs
IN addition to providing lower-cost housing for families to buy, the city government is also working on a program to provide affordable rental properties to the public. It has issued a draft of its plans, saying it hopes to provide a supply of rental housing that would be administered by professionals.
On Jiangchuan Road, there is an apartment building called the 2030 Youth Apartments. It's a brand new concept in public rental housing harking to the government plan of diversified investment and professional management.
The 102-unit apartment complex is located near the intersection of Lanping and Jiangchuan roads. It's the first residential complex earmarked for young people in the Minhang District.
Upon first arriving at the site, one is struck by the colorful exterior decor of the building. There are four floors of units, and each unit sports a similarly bright decor. The sizes of the flats range from 20 square meters to 40 square meters. Each studio apartment includes a bathroom and kitchen and is furnished with a desk, chairs, bed, shelving and television.
The units resemble a tidy, small hotel room. Tenants need little more than a suitcase to move in.
According to Xing Dongping, manager of the complex, rents here are lower than that for similar apartments in the immediate vicinity.
The complex is a renovated old home, Xing said. It was rehabilitated by the Wujing Property Management Co with investment from the government, other enterprises and some social institutes.
Although still considered a trial program, the concept is already gaining in popularity.
Its name comes from the fact that the studio rentals are mainly aimed at people between the ages of 20 and 30. Near the apartment building are the Zizhu Science Garden, Jiao Tong University, the Minhang Development Zone and the East China Normal University. It's an area of youth.
Alongside the gate of the apartment building is a book bar where tenants can read and connect to the Internet.
"Here we can chat with each other, and I've made a lot of friends," said one young tenant surnamed Chen, "In the future, the book bar will organize some outdoor activities, and we're all looking forward to it."
